Morphing into MENOPAUSE

Take the Menopause Quiz (1)

Menopause is defined as:
A.  Two or more irregular periods after age 40
B.  The start of hot flashes
C.  No menstrual period for 12 consecutive months
D.  An increase in mood swings.

CORRECT ANSWER IS C.
No menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.  Explanation: An absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. The menopausal transition starts with varying menstrual cycle length and ends with the final menstrual period.

You will find that there is an insect who we have some things in common with - the butterfly.  Starting out as an egg; progressing as a newborn- eating, growing and spending a large amount of time on our belly.  We then transition into puberty and from there blossoming into an adult - the reproductive stage.

For millions of women, one stage that we do not share with the butterfly is that when our reproductive stage comes to an end, we are faced with the challenges of having to deal with the symptoms and changes that menopause presents.

Menopause is a normal, natural event—defined as the final menstrual period and usually confirmed when a woman has missed her periods for 12 consecutive months (in the absence of other obvious causes). Menopause is associated with reduced functioning of the ovaries due to aging, resulting in lower levels of estrogen and other hormones. It marks the permanent end of fertility.  (2)

Menopause is neither a disease nor the end of your world, but a natural process in a woman’s life.  I like to call it a season of preparation and perfecting.    More than ever in our season of menopause, though each of us is different and has different needs; the fact remains; we need to one another.

We need to share what is or what is not working, resources, treatments, solutions and strategies that we have found to be helpful.   It doesn’t matter if you are menopausal, perimenopause, induced menopause, premature menopause or post menopause; let’s laugh and learn together in dispelling the rumors and myths, clearing up common misconceptions and breaking down barriers that would keep us from making the most of our lives.

Stay tuned next time; we go where it all began and ended with a period
THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE.
